How to Clean Windows You Can’t Reach
For most homeowners, cleaning the first-floor windows is a relatively easy task. But if you own a second-story home, you might become more concerned about how to reach every surface.
Not all windows can be easily accessed, and finding the best way to do the job can be challenging. There are multiple factors to consider, like the height of each window, what special tools are required, and most importantly, maintaining your safety.
Most homeowners choose to hire a professional window cleaning service. However, with the right tools, you can learn how to clean hard-to-reach windows on your own.
Preparing for the Cleaning Process
First, pick a day with fair weather (no rain in the forecast, or not too much sun). Too much sun can cause a glare while you’re cleaning, and rain will ruin any effort of effectively cleaning your windows.
Then, gather all the necessary supplies and tools:
Vacuum cleaner or broom with a long handle
Telescopic window cleaning kit (telescopic pole, squeegee with a rubber blade, strip washer)
Bucket (with warm water)
Dishwashing liquid
White vinegar (add to the bucket with warm water)
Cleaning Windows—With & Without a Ladder
For people who don’t own a ladder, don’t despair—there’s still a way you can clean your outside windows without a ladder.
With the vacuum cleaner or broom, begin by cleaning all the window crevices. This will help remove dirt, debris, and cobwebs before washing the windows.
As you apply the window cleaning solution to the windows, start the strip washer from the bottom corner of the window and move upward. Then, remove the suds with the extendable squeegee, moving from the top corner of the window and bringing it down to the bottom of the frame.
Use a micro-fiber cloth in between wipes, finish with a dry strip washer, and leave your windows to air dry.
If you do own a ladder, the cleaning process remains relatively the same, minus the extendable squeegee. Instead, opt for a high-quality, hand-held squeegee.
